The
Play of
Daniel

Victorian Youth Opera

13 - 15 April

Join Victorian Youth Opera and classical Turkish group Nefes Ensemble in an exciting collaboration at the State Library of Victoria. The medieval miracle play, The Play of Daniel will be performed in conjunction with the Library’s sumptuous exhibition, Love and Devotion: From Persia and Beyond - the first major exhibition of Persian manuscripts in Australia, presented in partnership with the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford.

The Play of Daniel is an example of a forerunner to opera. Written by the Youth of Beauvais, it represents the relationship between text and music which is characteristic of all operatic works.

“The State Library of Victoria, apart from its extraordinary collection, is a wonderful place to experience musical performances. Indeed, the State Library has a track record in this type of enterprise and Victorian Opera embraces the synergy of this exercise with its focus on this part of the ancient world, presenting a play which characterises the richness of Melbourne’s cultural life and the happy association of an opera company with a library.”
