The Threepenny Opera
Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht | 28 May - 19 June 2010
Merlyn Theatre at the CUB Malthouse
A Victorian Opera and Malthouse Theatre Co-Production
Following the sell-out success of Through the Looking Glass in 2008 Victorian Opera again joins forces with Malthouse Theatre to present The Threepenny Opera; a timeless story, bursting with song and laced with deliciously dark humour. With a stellar cast including Casey Benetto (Keating!), Paul Capsis (The Rocky Horror Show), Judi Connelli (Sweeney Todd) and Eddie Perfect (Shane Warne: The Musical) conducted by Richard Gill and directed by Michael Kantor, this production enlivens the sordid underbelly of 1920s Berlin as a wild and gritty modern metropolis.
Occupying the hinterland between opera and music theatre The Threepenny Opera is the masterwork of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. It is a biting examination of the bourgeoisie of post-war Europe, based on John Gay's The Beggar's Opera.
Chronicling the life of notorious crime-boss Macheath "Mack the Knife", following his impulsive marriage to the daughter of fellow conman Jonathan Jeremiah Peachum, The Threepenny Opera's irresistible score palpably evokes the corruption and dread of our antihero's escapade.
This timeless classic features raw and intensely beautiful music including the chilling classic, Mack the Knife.
"Music theatre is a predictable source of thrills but this year the heat may come from its wild-child relative, opera. Eyes and ears will be on the Victorian Opera as it goes into its fifth season" The Herald Sun, January 2010
