Julius Caesar
by George Frideric Handel | 20 - 30 July
Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre
Following the success of Xerxes, Victorian Opera returns to the incredible acoustic of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Conducted by Richard Gill and introducing as director, Australian Ballet legend Steven Heathcote, this new production is a must-see performance of the 2010 arts calendar.
Magnificent arias combine with marvellously ornate orchestral writing in one of Handel's greatest operas, Julius Caesar. This baroque masterpiece explores the transience of fame, warfare, passionate love, betrayal and heroism focused around Caesar and his bewitching love affair with Cleopatra.
Tobias Cole (Xerxes) is joined by celebrated The Coronation of Poppea duo, Tiffany Speight and David Hansen, who again come together as lovers in conflict in this compelling story of Cleopatra and her power to manipulate the men around her.
