Comic Delights open next week in the Playhouse

The Bear and Angélique, opening next week at the Arts Centre, are two one-act comic operas, which, paired together offer an evening full of love, torment and comic mishap.

Watch the video to see behind the scenes of The Bear/Angélique and gain insights into the characters and the development of the two operas in rehearsals. Listen to director Talya Masel, conductor Ollivier-Philippe Cuneo and cast members, and have a sneak peek at the set and costumes.

The double-bill features many in the cast and creative team who have been nominated in this year's Green Room awards including director Talya Masel and set designer Adam Gardnir (both nominated for Rembrandt's Wife) as well as singers Gary Rowley (Rembrandt's Wife) Andrew Collis (nominated for Don Giovanni) Samuel Dundas, Paul Biencourt and Jacob Caine (all nominated for Ariadne auf Naxos).

The Bear/Angélique

Rehearsals for The Bear/Angélique have moved to the Arts Centre, Playhouse following the bump-in of the set. Finishing touches are being put on the costumes and the singers are finally able to 'get a feel' for the sets in position on the Playhouse stage.

Green Room Awards

Victorian Opera has been nominated for 17 Green Room awards. Each production in the entire 2009 season received a nomination, as well as nominations for Best Production, Conductor, and Direction. The brand new Australian work Rembrandt's Wife, composed by Andrew Ford and libretto by Sue Smith, received the most nominations.

The Damnation of Faust and Myer Music Bowl Concert

The Damnation of Faust on 19 February was extremely well received. Victorian Opera was also delighted to collaborate in presenting  a concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in the Sydney Myer Music Bowl on 27 February to a large and enthusiastic audience.

Sing Your Own Gilbert & Sullivan

Time to warm up the vocal chords and get the lips moving as we prepare for Sing Your Own Gilbert & Sullivan on 20 March in BMW Edge, Federation Square.
