Les Noces / Oedipus Rex

17 February | Stravinsky Double Bill

Two of Stravinsky's master works performed by some of Victoria's finest artists.

Commissioned by the Ballets Russes, Les Noces ("The Wedding") combines the forces of four concert grand pianos, a huge percussion battery, soloists and large chorus. It is a work of originality and raw power, regarded by many as one of Stravinsky's most remarkable achievements.

The program concludes with the 'Opera-Oratorio' Oedipus Rex, a powerful masterwork of Stravinsky's neoclassical period. With a libretto by Jean Cocteau, it is based on Sophocles' tragic tale of plague, murder and accidental incest.

Les Noces will be performed in French and Oedipus Rex in Latin, with translations provided in the program.
