Last night saw the 31st annual Green Room Awards - a celebration of the performing arts in Victoria over the past year - and what a night it was! Victorian Opera and its artists were thrilled to attend the ceremony in Melbourne's Comedy Theatre, taking home six awards of the nine nominated categories.
The first win went to the talented Stuart Maunder for his direction of Victorian Opera's incredibly successful musical theatre production Sunday in the Park with George. Stuart will return to the work of Sondheim and Lapine in Into the Woods.
Then came the award for Female in a Supporting Role - Opera, which went to a very deserving Eva Jinhee Kong for her portrayal of Madam Mao in Nixon in China.
From individual acknowledgements to the celebration of teamwork, the award for Ensemble - Opera was picked up by the cast of The Magic Pudding - the opera a great outcome for our Puddin' Owners including our very talented Master of Music (Opera Performance) students from 2012/2013.
Continuing the Nixon in China trend, Bradley Daley took home the award for Male Performer - Opera following his acclaimed portrayal of Mao Tse-tung.
To cap off a successful night, the award for Production - Opera went to...you guessed it, Nixon in China with its fourth acknowledgement in the Green Room Awards!
The company would like to thank the Green Room Awards Association for these honours, as well as all the performers, artists, creative teams, production staff and musicians who made this outcome possible. But most of all we would like to thank the community who supports us.
