Montsalvat Community Youth Project

Montsalvat and Victorian Opera come together to present a semi-staged performance of The Grumpiest Boy in the World as part of their inaugural community youth project.

Commissioned by Victorian Opera and premiered in 2015, playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer and composer Joseph Twist’s opera tells the tale of a grumpy seven-year-old Zachary Briddling. Fed up with being normal, Zachary travels to places where giants and hairy creatures live, and discovers that anyone can stand out, no matter how ordinary they believe they are.

Singers aged 15-25 are invited to audition for a soloist or chorus role as part of the cast for this production. Successful applicants will work closely with Victorian Opera’s music staff and artistic teams to present this charming work in Montsalvat’s Great Hall.

The program will commence on Monday 28 June 2021 and conclude with performances on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 July 2021. All rehearsals will take place in the Great Hall at Montsalvat, Eltham (download the rehearsal schedule below).

Audition registrations are now open and will close at 5pm on Friday 16 April. Register here.

Auditions will be held on:
Thursday 29 April / Friday 30 April, 4:00pm – 7:00pm
Montsalvat's Barn Gallery

Auditionees are asked to prepare one of the below excerpts from the opera and one contrasting work of their own choice. Please prepare the vocal line appropriate to your voice type (SATB).
