Orpheus in the Underworld

Saturday 30 July, 5.00 pm SOLD OUT
Venue: Church of All Nations (180 Palmerston St, Carlton VIC 3053)

Celebrating its eighth year in 2022, the Victorian Opera Youth Chorus Ensemble (VOYCE) presents Orpheus in the Underworld in an energetic performance that promises to bring the snap and sizzle of a Hades Bacchanale to your Melbourne winter.

One of the world's most loved operettas, Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld tells the tale of Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice, but not in the way you’ve heard it before! Revolutionary for its time, this work thumbs its nose to the establishment and embraces fun over responsibility via a seemingly endless string of hit tunes (including the immortal Can-Can). This reduced version showcases the energy and talent of Victoria's next generation of opera stars.

Voss (Adelaide)

Venue: Festival Theatre, Adelaide

The obsessive explorer, the Australian outback and the lover he leaves behind.

Widely considered to be the great Australian opera, Voss is both the semi-biographical account of an attempt to conquer the Australian continent and an epic love story.

Based on Patrick White’s novel about explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who disappeared whilst on expedition in outback Australia around 1845, the opera by Richard Meale with a libretto by David Malouf, was the sensation of Adelaide Festival of Arts when it premiered in 1986. Meale’s epic score is brought to life by an acclaimed all-Australian cast, led by Samuel Dundas as Voss and Emma Pearson as Laura, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and State Opera Ensemble under the baton of Richard Mills.

Victorian Opera presents this event in association with State Opera of South Australia.
