VICTORIAN OPERA ANNOUNCES THE 2024 OPERA PRIZE WINNERS Copy

Victorian Opera is pleased to announce the 2024 recipients of the Victorian Opera Prize: Douglas Kelly (tenor) and Michaela Cadwgan (soprano).

Now in its fourth year, thanks to the generous support from Dr Michael Stubbs and Malcolm Roberts and Mary Davidson and Mary Davidson & the family of the late Frederick R Davidson AM the Opera Prize aims to unearth Australian-based operatic talent and foster their careers. The winners will receive full-time employment with Victorian Opera, alongside dedicated mentoring and coaching to help them advance to a world class industry standard. They will work closely with Artistic Director Stuart Maunder and Victorian Opera staff to help hone their craft over 2024.

Douglas Kelly

Douglas has performed nationally and internationally in opera, oratorio, and concert work. Many of you will remember Douglas as the title role in The Grumpiest Boy in the World, and his appearances in Melbourne,Cheremushki and Capriccio.

Michaela Cadwgan

Michaela is a wonderful young soprano from New Zealand with many awards to her name. She has performed with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia, Opera Australia Orchestra, and Orchestra Wellington, and will soon be debuting with New Zealand Opera.
