This witty production transports visionary composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s score and Vladimir Mass and Mikhail Chervinsky’s sarcastically funny libretto from a Soviet-era Khrushchev-style apartment complex to contemporary Melbourne.

But this operetta makes light work of heavy issues through its darkly comedic use of magic realism into everyday struggles with a truth-telling park bench, a phone booth for the pure of heart and a garden where flowers bloom for good people and wither for bad.

Featuring our ‘VO Emerges’ cast, this will be your chance to see the next generation showcase their talents and innovative perspectives on the challenges we still face in Melbourne today. So step into a world where social issues are examined through a lens of comedy, satire and magic.

About the show

Relevant yet magical – It’s undeniable, we’re in the grips of a housing crisis – but in the imaginary suburb of Melbourne, Cheremushki, magical realism is an ironic antidote to harsh realities.

Humour – Using comedy to analyse hardship is an effective lens. So don’t expect a lecture on longing, but enjoy the comedy of life’s struggles.

Layered, uplifting, chaotic music: Composer Dimitri Shostakovich was a genius at mixing styles from jazz to classical to film scores. He blended influences to create meaning, when asked to write for the Soviet regime he famously used circus music to undermine the powers that be.

New stars: Featuring the talented next generation of opera stars, this production is world-class while also giving you a glimpse of faces and names that will be set for bigger stages.
